SXSW 2012 Day 5 – 18. March, 2012

My final day of shows…

(deep breath)

..let’s do this.

I started the morning by catching The Big Pink in the Convention Center. Yeah, the bass was heavy but it wasn’t giving me heart palpitations like it did before.

My first new act of the day was Justin Townes Earle.

SXSW 2012 Day 5 - 04

This guy is what Ryan Adams used to be for me (minus the drunk dramatics). He mostly performed songs from his upcoming album and they’re so beautifully written and his solo acoustic performance was so amazingly intimate that it brought the crowd to their feet. He is an act worth catching.

Grabbing a grilled cheese on the run, I caught Dinosaur Feathers at the Dickies party.

SXSW 2012 Day 5 - 09

Not bad. I can’t wait to see what they grow into.

As I had time to burn and wanted to maximize the number of shows I saw, I ducked into the British Party @ Latitude 30 to catch D/R/U/G/S.

SXSW 2012 Day 5 - 12

Goddamn, this kid is a turntable wiz. His tracks don’t do him justice. Catch him live.

After dinner I raced all the way across town to catch a New York band, check, a Brooklyn band, check, a… fuck, I can’t remember what neighborhood they were from but that’s how they identified themselves (wankers), a band called The Echo Friendly.

SXSW 2012 Day 5 - 15

Aaaaanyway, these guys were okay. Not bad, not great.

I started my way towards the center of it all and caught Dillion Francis.

SXSW 2012 Day 5 - 17

First, if you read my tweet, I wasn’t kidding about meeting this beautiful girl that danced like a demon. Sorry, no pic. To dazzled.

But I digress. The kid was pretty great despite being drunk. Worth a listen.

I then hit the molasses that was 6th street to see LA band, correction, the Echo Park band (wankers), NO.

SXSW 2012 Day 5 - 21

These guys were pretty damn good. I gotta look them up when I get home.

Next door I caught The John Steel Singers.

SXSW 2012 Day 5 - 24

Poor guys, the main sound tech was so drunk I think he was having his son run the board. The result was that their sound was awful. Bummer.

Next I caught another band I first heard at SXSW, We Were Promised Jetpacks.

SXSW 2012 Day 5 - 26

I love these guys but I’m not the biggest fan of their latest album.

I wandered back into The Stage on 6th (no woman waiting to choke me this time) and caught a bit of Jimmy Cliff.

SXSW 2012 Day 5 - 29

What can I say, he’s a legend.

I finished the night with The Heavy.

SXSW 2012 Day 5 - 32

Man, they brought it so hard that they brought the house down.

And my pick of the day is… shit, since it’s the last day I’ll give you three of my favorites that speak to the diversity of SXSW, as well as my own tastes.

First, Justin Townes Earle.

And that’s a wrap. Next stop, home.

Next fest: Sasquatch. I have two tickets. If you want to come with me, just write a 500 word essay about why you’d like to spend a sexy weekend with yours truly.

SXSW 2010 Photos – 22. March, 2010

First you should know that I go to festivals to see bands, not take photos. That said, I think I sometimes take some great photos but please, judge for yourself. Here are all the pics I took from SXSW. They’re not color corrected or cropped and all most all the time I was still trying to rock out so forgive the sloppiness.

Oh, I really need a great digital point-n-shoot with a zoom and a super fast lens. Recommendations?

SXSW 2010 Day 1 – 18. March, 2010

Welcome to day one of my SXSW experience. Only minutes after I landed was I scooped up by a hippie-looking bus and treated to an advance of the upcoming album by The New Pornographers.

SXSW 2010 Day 1 - 02

BTW, it sounded great.

After grabbing my badge and a quick bite at Stubb’s it was time to check out Visqueen.

SXSW 2010 Day 1 - 07

Rachel Flotard sure can rock and man does she have a great set of pipes… and the rest of her ain’t bad neither. Rachel, if you’re ever in LA I’d be more than happy to treat ya to dinner and drinks.

Next up was The Walkmen.

SXSW 2010 Day 1 - 08

Having seen them before, I knew they’d sound great but probably still feel as if they’re… I dunno, I’m not a fan of their stage presence.

I quickly ran up the block to see Here We Go Magic.

SXSW 2010 Day 1 - 09

It wasn’t magic for me.

Two blocks down (gotta love these short sprints) I saw Power Solo at someone’s insistence.

SXSW 2010 Day 1 - 10

It was different.

As I raced across 6th Street for my next show I stumbled across an awesome, mesmerizing voice and beat. Turned out to be The Asteroids Galaxy Tour.

SXSW 2010 Day 1 - 11.

Must check them out, give them a proper listen.

The room was packed for We Were Promised Jetpacks and it’s clear why.

SXSW 2010 Day 1 - 12

These youngins from Scotland rocked it.

Finally I caught one of my favorite acts, Frightened Rabbit, and while I’m still warming up to the new album (it didn’t knock me out instantly like the last album did) their stage presence and musicianship is only that much better.

SXSW 2010 Day 1 - 14

Fuck, they were awesome.

I tried to end the night with Surfer Blood but the room was so packed I was never gonna get in. I decided to stumble home but instead wandered in to see a bit of Spoon. They sounded great but I’ve seen them a few times and the siren song of a full night’s sleep was just too powerful.

That wraps my first day. That means it’s time for my pick-of-the-day. Ladies and gentlemen, prepare to fall in love with We Were Promised Jetpacks.
