SXSW 2011 Sampler F-J – 12. March, 2011

Today you’re getting a tune from F-J. Have you ever heard of Foster The People? I hadn’t until my friend Kaz played them. Take a listen.

Here’s hoping they can translate that fun to a live setting.

SXSW 2011 Sampler A-E – 11. March, 2011

So a few days ago I posted a link to 700+ MP3s by bands playing SXSW this year. As the internet is turning into a curated experience, allow me to pick you some of the best songs. I’ve split up the selections alphabetically and today I’m gonna pick the best song from A-E.

Actually, I’m gonna give you two. First is a band I just heard of, Alcoholic Faith Mission.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

The second is an artist my friend Rosie introduced me to. Eli “Paperboy” Reed.

I don’t know about you but I’m getting psyched!

I Got SXSW 2011 RSVP Fever – 10. March, 2011

In less than a week, I’ll be in Austin for SXSW. Sure, there’s tons to do and see with just the city and festival but last year I discovered the party scene and I’m hooked. Yes, I have RSVP fever.

What the best medicine? I follow this Twitter feed and sign up for whatever doesn’t look sketchy.

And this is my Twitter feed, if you were wondering.

A Fistful of SXSW – 3. March, 2011

As it’s March, that can only mean one thing: my trip to Austin for the SXSW Music Festival is right around the corner. For those of you not going, you can still check out some of the bands playing this year.

That’s right, once again a kind soul has bundled all the available MP3s as a single torrent. And if you’re new to torrents, you’ll need an aggregator and once again I recommend Transmission for the Mac (if you really like the software, support the developer by making a donation).

I’m currently slogging my way through the 4 GB of songs (somewhere in the middle of the letter “E”), but if you find something you like, give me a shout.

Seeking Awesome Festivals for LAST NIGHT – 15. September, 2010

As I’m slamming through post so I have something decent to hand in for the Sundance submission deadline, I realize it’s been ages since I’ve submitted a film to festivals. I’m out of the loop. I don’t know what are the new make-or-break festivals out there. Right now I’m planning on submitting to…

  • Sundance – I really liked the addition of the NEXT category.
  • Slamdance – I feel like they really champion smaller films, plus my friend won their big award last year.
  • SXSW – The community seems to get behind smaller, more intimate indies.
  • The Berlinale – Everyone that’s gone RAVES about this fest.
  • Cannes – THE European festival to sell your film.
  • LAFF – A great hometown platform for interesting films.
  • Toronto – Films are still selling at this festival.

What other fests should I apply to? Please let me know in the comments section of my blog. Also, leave a reason why.

Friday Fun: Best of SXSW 2010 – 9. April, 2010

A few posts ago I told you about a SXSW music torrent that contained 1,038 songs.  I listened to all those songs and these are the 59 tracks that I found worthy of a second listen.

I just saved you over a day of listening.  You’re welcome.  So what do you think?  Do you like/hate any of these?

March 2010 Goal Check – 1. April, 2010

25% of the year is over so it’s time to check in on those goals again.

Finish My Feature FilmMy editor finished a cut and it looked pretty good. Obviously, I had notes but we are definitely on the same page and it feels fucking awesome to move forward. Now I just need him to export a QuickTime so I can obsessively watch it at home in High-Def. You’re asking how I’m gonna author & burn a Blu-ray from my Mac, right? Wrong. I’m gonna export the HD Quicktime to play on my PS3. Stu, you’re a hero.

Write Another TV Spec – I am WAY behind on CHUCK and FRINGE but I’m still determined write for one of these shows. I think I’m gonna take a day off, hook up the computer to the TV and just plow through the second seasons of both.

Get Hired to Direct – No bites yet.

Get My Web Series Up & Running – So I had three formal pitches and about a dozen “tell me what you’re working on” while waiting for the elevator and the response has been overwhelming. Most people love it and the rest get a right hook to their prudish sensibilities. No, seriously, one woman yelled out “oh God!” in reaction to one of our randier jokes. Awesome! Also, I’ve cut together some character vlogs and need to do more but I’ve also been writing the first season. Christ, this is really happening. Also, you’ll see that I no longer use the “T” word because it resulted in my getting spammed by those interested in this “T” word.

Write A Feature Script – I started an outline but got sidetracked by the web series and, well…

As for other goals I still don’t have a sport, a class, an acoustic guitar, a way to defy death, a way to invest and I’m still trying to finish GLUE but I did go to SXSW and I had a fucking blast so that counts for something, right?

SXSW 2010 Photos – 22. March, 2010

First you should know that I go to festivals to see bands, not take photos. That said, I think I sometimes take some great photos but please, judge for yourself. Here are all the pics I took from SXSW. They’re not color corrected or cropped and all most all the time I was still trying to rock out so forgive the sloppiness.

Oh, I really need a great digital point-n-shoot with a zoom and a super fast lens. Recommendations?

SXSW 2010 Day 4 – 21. March, 2010

My final day at SXSW started late but thanks to my friend, the beautiful & always stylish Kelly, I was able to see Ben Gibbard play the Stereogum party.

SXSW 2010 Day 4 - 08

Man, this man and his band will always have space on my music shelf.

I then ran across town to catch The Boxer Rebellion.

SXSW 2010 Day 4 - 10

As you can see from that pic, these guys were rocking the hell out of their last show.

And what SXSW would be complete without a Frightened Rabbit sighting.

SXSW 2010 Day 4 - 21

So damn good. I’m pretty sure the plane ride home will feature lots of their tunes only interrupted by…

Visqueen.

SXSW 2010 Day 4 - 40

This was my second time seeing them but now I’m completely in love with Rachel Flotard. Why? First, she saw me singing along and mentioned it. Second, the set was awesome and she even took an off-the-cuff request from the audience. Third, she referenced both Winger and “Pigs in Space“. Seriously, Rachel, when you’re in LA drop me a line and I’ll take you out for a dinner.

Next up was Minipop.

SXSW 2010 Day 4 - 50

Why these guys? Because I like their song from the 1,038 MP3 SXSW music sampler I told you about. What an added bonus that the lead singer is such a cutie.

I then saw Best Coast because my friend Kate tole me to.

SXSW 2010 Day 4 - 57

Since they’re a new band and the lead singer was whining about having played so many shows at the festival (who didn’t?) all I’ll say is that I should have checked out Surfer Blood instead.

And finally I braved the cold night to witness Death.

SXSW 2010 Day 4 - 63

They were awesome and if you don’t know their story you should listen to this NPR story. And obviously they’re my pick-of-the-day.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

And with the I say adios to SXSW. I hope to come back soon. LA, here I come.

BTW, the next stop on the Tony Music Express is Coachella!
