SXSW 2011 Day 2 – 18. March, 2011

The day started late but well thanks to lunch at the Texas Chili Parlor. From there is was straight to the Dickie’s party to catch The Naked and Famous.

SXSW 2011 Day 2 - 01

Those two catchy songs you’ve heard are awesome, the others… not so much (but they show promise).

After a long wander and some dinner at Stubb’s, it was time to catch Geographer.

SXSW 2011 Day 2 - 02

Due to severe technical issues, the set was cut very short. From what I heard, it could have been interesting. After missing a very cute Mexican (I think my schedule was wrong), I checked out the end of Allie Moss.

SXSW 2011 Day 2 - 03

Before catching Sonos.

SXSW 2011 Day 2 - 04

Wow, these kids sounded great. And that one brunette is super sexy. Actually, all three ladies were so hot they had me thinking dirty thoughts. I love a capella that makes me think dirty thoughts.

I then raced over to check out the awesomely cute K.Flay.

SXSW 2011 Day 2 - 05

I think hip-hop is tough to do live and she was so close to being great, it just felt like she was holding back. She could have been ferocious.

Speaking of ferocious, The Kills tore the stage up.

SXSW 2011 Day 2 - 09

You have got to see these guys live.

After that I caught some of Tristen.

SXSW 2011 Day 2 - 13

I like that one song about drugs but her set wasn’t holding my interest.

I then ran over to check out Surfer Blood.

SXSW 2011 Day 2 - 16

I wish I could undo seeing them live but catching a couple of tunes by TV on the Radio ended the night on a better note.

So, in honor of the bitches that rock, I give you three acts of the day. The first comes for a triple of hot babes (and 2 dudes) that make up Sonos

And the last come from the love of my life, VV (and The Kills)

And that’s a night (especially since I have an early morning).

SXSW 2011 Day 1 – 17. March, 2011

After a delayed flight because of a small (and fatal) plane crash at my airport, I was on my way to Austin for SXSW.

SXSW Day 01 - 1

After snagging my badge (my hotel is walkable but it’s an “athletic” walk), I raced across town to check out the KCRW show and The Belle Brigade.

SXSW Day 01 - 4

Then I tried to see The Black Angels but the line was around the block so I hoofed back across town to see Low in a church.

SXSW Day 01 - 6

Ya know, churches can be great venues, just not at festivals. I then ran over to check out Small Sins in a tiny venue.

SXSW Day 01 - 7

Despite terrible sound issues, they were awesome. I cut early so I could check out Duran Duran. The line was so massive I just stood outside, listened to “Notorious” and ran across the street to see Yuck.

SXSW Day 01 - 8

They were so hip I think they felt they didn’t have to try.

Guys, you always gotta try.

If it isn’t obvious, my pick of the day is a band I’ve already highlighted. Please, go buy an album by Small Sins.

Time for bed, then an early morning to plan my party prowl.

PS, can you tell I got a new iPhone with Hipstamatic?

SXSW 2011 Pre-Flight Tunes – 16. March, 2011

As I’m about to get on a plane, I give you three more songs (and you say solitary men aren’t givers).

First, a fun tune by Army Navy (friends have mentioned the band).

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

The second is a punky grrrrl offering by Colleen Green (let’s hope she doesn’t suck the way Best Coast did last year — yeah, I said it).

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

And the final offering comes from one of my favorite bands, The Kills.

And the next post will be from Austin.

Over and out.

SXSW 2011 Sampler A-E – 11. March, 2011

So a few days ago I posted a link to 700+ MP3s by bands playing SXSW this year. As the internet is turning into a curated experience, allow me to pick you some of the best songs. I’ve split up the selections alphabetically and today I’m gonna pick the best song from A-E.

Actually, I’m gonna give you two. First is a band I just heard of, Alcoholic Faith Mission.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

The second is an artist my friend Rosie introduced me to. Eli “Paperboy” Reed.

I don’t know about you but I’m getting psyched!

I Got SXSW 2011 RSVP Fever – 10. March, 2011

In less than a week, I’ll be in Austin for SXSW. Sure, there’s tons to do and see with just the city and festival but last year I discovered the party scene and I’m hooked. Yes, I have RSVP fever.

What the best medicine? I follow this Twitter feed and sign up for whatever doesn’t look sketchy.

And this is my Twitter feed, if you were wondering.

A Fistful of SXSW – 3. March, 2011

As it’s March, that can only mean one thing: my trip to Austin for the SXSW Music Festival is right around the corner. For those of you not going, you can still check out some of the bands playing this year.

That’s right, once again a kind soul has bundled all the available MP3s as a single torrent. And if you’re new to torrents, you’ll need an aggregator and once again I recommend Transmission for the Mac (if you really like the software, support the developer by making a donation).

I’m currently slogging my way through the 4 GB of songs (somewhere in the middle of the letter “E”), but if you find something you like, give me a shout.
