Sequelitis – 28. October, 2010

So there’s been a slew of big industry news over the last couple of days.

So all of these huge director are making sequels. What the F**K happened to any semblance of originality? Okay, I’ll give passes to Nolan because of INCEPTION, to Jackson because he has directed nothing but duds since THE LORD OF THE RINGS, to Ridley because no one saw GLADIATOR 4, I mean ROBIN HOOD, and to Brad Bird because it’s his first live-action film.

But Cameron? Dude! What possible reason could he have to make two more AVATAR movies? Is it because he didn’t win Best Picture? Does he need more money? Why not CLEOPATRA? Why not BATTLE ANGEL? Christ, I would have rather he hijacked SPIDER-MAN.

Sigh. Maybe I’m just jealous that I don’t have these high class problems.

Still, I make this promise to you: if I’m subtitling AVATAR 2: NOT WITHOUT MY IKRAN in 2014 then I will commit suicide live, on the internet… if we still have an internet in 2014.

(and yes, I’m in a bad mood)

James Cameron’s Spider-Man – 13. January, 2010

In case you haven’t heard the news, SPIDER-MAN 4 isn’t happening. What’s more, Sony has decided to dump the old cast/director and reboot the series.

In my nerd heart, this only means one thing: we might gets James Cameron’s SPIDER-MAN after all.

For those that don’t remember, Cameron lobbied to direct a SPIDER-MAN film for Fox but Sony and several other production entities claimed ownership over the franchise. It took a court hearing to grant Sony the rights but by that time Cameron had moved on to a long gestating project called AVATAR.

Now that Sony wants to reboot the series, why not go back to Cameron’s treatment? Wouldn’t that be f**king awesome? I mean, who else could do a better job? Fincher?

Ooh, a Fincher Spidey would be cool.

Hey, a fan boy can dream.

Giving Thanks for James Cameron – 26. November, 2009

First, I hope you’re having a happy Thanksgiving. Now please allow me to give thanks for…

james-cameron.jpg

That’s right, I’m giving thanks for James Cameron and not just because he’s finally releasing a movie.

No, I’d like to thank him for putting some ducats in my pocket.

As some of you may know, I’m involved in digital cinema. I run a quality control team and right now AVATAR has our complete attention. But if you really know me, you know I’m a workaholic. That’s why I took a job timing and placing stereoscopic subtitles for AVATAR. No rest for the wicked, right?

Also, if you’ve ever asked me what my favorite film is, I have a quick and reliable answer. They are (in no particular order)…

  • Raging Bull
  • Raising Arizona
  • Aliens
  • All three were formative in pushing me towards a career in the movies and each has left an indelible imprint on the work I do. How so? You’ll just have to look at my stuff and figure that out for yourself but I’ll tell you that ALIENS was the first movie I obsessed over. I read all the novelizations, I knew all the characters, gear and dialog, I played all the video games, I even had nightmares for years to come (it was the little ones that freaked me out).

Jim (I can call you “Jim,” right?), I’m treating your flick as if it were my own so don’t worry, I won’t let Paul Verhoeven subtitle this motherfucker (that’s for all of you that read Jim’s profile in The New Yorker).

People of the world, if you have a quality AVATAR viewing experience, give me some props!

    Comic-Con 2009 Day 02 – 24. July, 2009

Today I walked the main exhibit floor. Holy, it’s huge. I tried to soak it in and that proved to be (say it with me now) overwhelming. That took up most of my day. Yeah, it’s that big. Get a glimpse for yourself.

Only caught one panel featuring two filmmakers ya might have heard of.

    Comic-Con 2009 Day 02 - 37
    Peter Jackson

    Comic-Con 2009 Day 02 - 38
    James Cameron

I could have listened to these guys talk about film for hours. I left the panel feeling incredibly inspired. Then I checked out the Star Wars Fan Film Awards and I got really… well… (how do I stay positive here?)… let’s just say I left early and decided that a good night’s sleep would be time better spent.
