VeriziPhone @ SXSW – 22. March, 2011

Just a head’s up that I recently switch to a Verizon iPhone. I can happily report that at this year’s SXSW I never had a dropped call, never failed to send a text message and never had an issue connecting to any web based apps (unlike last year).

well done, Verizon.

SXSW 2011 Day 1 – 17. March, 2011

After a delayed flight because of a small (and fatal) plane crash at my airport, I was on my way to Austin for SXSW.

SXSW Day 01 - 1

After snagging my badge (my hotel is walkable but it’s an “athletic” walk), I raced across town to check out the KCRW show and The Belle Brigade.

SXSW Day 01 - 4

Then I tried to see The Black Angels but the line was around the block so I hoofed back across town to see Low in a church.

SXSW Day 01 - 6

Ya know, churches can be great venues, just not at festivals. I then ran over to check out Small Sins in a tiny venue.

SXSW Day 01 - 7

Despite terrible sound issues, they were awesome. I cut early so I could check out Duran Duran. The line was so massive I just stood outside, listened to “Notorious” and ran across the street to see Yuck.

SXSW Day 01 - 8

They were so hip I think they felt they didn’t have to try.

Guys, you always gotta try.

If it isn’t obvious, my pick of the day is a band I’ve already highlighted. Please, go buy an album by Small Sins.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Time for bed, then an early morning to plan my party prowl.

PS, can you tell I got a new iPhone with Hipstamatic?

Bigger Not Always Better – 7. March, 2011

Years ago, when I first got a cell phone, I was warned about AT&T and their (lack of) service. I don’t remember my first carrier but I know they either 1) went under or 2) were bought by AT&T. I then switched to Pac Bell but they were soon acquired by AT&T. I stuck with AT&T through the iPhone debacle but the second Verizon sold the iPhone, I jumped ship. Let’s see how this evil empire fares.

But I’m not writing about my cell service. I’m forecasting a trend. G-Technology is my favorite hard drive maker. They were a small shop in Santa Monica, had great customer service and a warranty that couldn’t be beat. Then Hitachi bought them. Okay, they seem good so far.

Now news just broke that Western Digital bought Hitachi making them the largest HDD manufacturer in the world.

Let’s hope they keep G-Tech classy.

February 2010 Goal Check – 1. March, 2010

What? The month’s already over? S**t! Time to check in with those goals I set at the start of the year.

Finish My Feature Film – No real progress here but I should be looking at a cut next month.

Write Another TV Spec – This too has taken a back seat but I am plowing through season 2 of CHUCK on my iPhone and the FRINGE season 1 Blu-ray on my PS3.

Get Hired to Direct – Um, yeah, this really isn’t happening either. Okay, by now you’re asking what the hell is wrong with me. You must think I’m a flake. I’m not, I just got hit with a one-two-punch of having a roller derby girl spurn my affections (lesson: never like them more than they like you) and then the most intense flu I’ve had since childhood. That ate up about 2-3 weeks of my life.

Get My Transmedia Project Up & Running – Good news here: I have 4 pitch meetings this week. I’ll be meeting with a creative/tech agency, a talent agent, a new media producer and a web focused production company. That means I have to get this pitch prepped ASAP.

Write a Feature Script – Nope, didn’t really push the bromance but I’m punching up this horror/thriller that a director, and friend, wants to take into a genre division. And it’s due the same week as my 4 pitches.

Gulp.

As for my other goals, I’m still looking for a sport, a class, a way to defy death, an acoustic guitar, a way to invest and I really gotta finish GLUE by Irvine Welsh.

Happy Year of Me, Pub Style – 23. February, 2010

My buddy Sean keeps saying “this is the year of Tony” but I didn’t realize how prescient he was until we went to Downtown Los Angeles for the Chinese New Year Parade and saw that it is in deed The Year of the Tiger.

(thanks to Clelio for first giving me that nickname)

And how better to celebrate my year than with an iPhone augmented reality app from Thai beer maker Tiger that helps you find suds in the UK.

Yeah, I know, that was a stretch of a segue but you see how I went from Tony to Year of the Tiger to Tiger Beer to an iPhone app I can’t use because mine is so old plus it only working in the United Kingdom… hey, cut me some slack. I just got over a terrible flu.

Anyway, here’s a video showing how the app works.

Any of my UK readers w/ iPhones wanna tell me if the app works?

(Brien, you don’t have an iPhone, do ya?)

Turn Off That iPhone – 2. January, 2009

While editing a PSA for a national women’s health clinic I’ve run into an audio issue, one that manifests itself exactly as on my film. In both cases there’s a noticeable buzz on the recorded production track and I’m suspecting it’s related to these guys:

iphone.jpg

In my film, it takes place during a scene shot in a bathroom. On that set, there were at least 3 iPhones I was aware of. On this PSA, the set was a small office and I counted at least 6 iPhones.

Now I know cell phones can cause speakers to buzz but in all my years of post-production I’ve never had this buzz show up on a digitally recorded track.

Have any of you noticed issues when recording audio to an HVX200? What about to a stand-alone recorder? Have any of you noticed this related to iPhones within close proximity of the recording device?

Regardless, the next time I’m on set I’m asking everyone to put their cells (iPhone or otherwise) in a room far from set and far from the production mixer.

Where Are You Watching? – 3. December, 2008

Last week the New York Times had an article on America’s changing viewing habits. Let me sum it up like this: it does not bode well for those of us hoping to theatrically distribute an independent feature film.

In the tradition of “show me, don’t tell me,” why don’t I illustrate the point with a graphic.

Viewing-Habits-graphic.jpg

I can tell you that I watch new episodes of Heroes, Fringe, 30 Rock, The Office, The Simpsons & King of the Hill via Hulu. I watch the new season of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles as well as old episodes of favorite shows on my iPhone. I watch DVDs from Netflix (and from my own collection) on my television and I watch digitally projected feature films for work at work. What about you?
