Consumed May 2016 – 31. May, 2016

I finished submitting my script at 4:31AM. I’m done… at least until I have to submit to Final Draft Big Break and the NHMC fellowship… but for now, I’m done. This is me for the next week:

Here’s what I somehow managed to consume when I wasn’t writing like a maniac.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow – Giant robots! Awesome!

Agents of SHIELD
Bob’s Burgers
The 100
The Flash
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend – A pretty great season finale.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Captain America: Civil War – Everything I expected and hoped.

The Nice Guys – Ryan Gosling goes for the funny. I like it.

Frightened Rabbit live @ The Fonda – I have been loving this band for a decade. So great to see them live.

Private Citizens by Tony Tulathimutte – If a thesaurus were to masturbate, you’d get this book.

Locke & Key – Finally finished the whole thing. It’s pretty goddamn great. No wonder they want to make it into a TV show.

The Walking Dead (The Alien) – Maybe the best single issue of The Walking Dead I’ve ever read.

Captain America: White
Injustice: Gods Among Us Year Five
Codename: Baboushka – Met the artist. Love her style.

Our Love is Real – Not as disturbing as I thought it’d be.

DC Comic’s Bombshells
Birthright – Pretty cool idea

iZombie – The comic is nothing like the TV show.

Doctor Strange
Black Canary – So damn good. Want more!

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl – Tons of fun!

The Surface

…Tony sleep now.

Ten Years of Frightened Rabbit – 26. May, 2016

I saw Frightened Rabbit live just a few days ago. During the show, Scott mentioned that this week was the ten year anniversary of their first album. Holy rabbit!

That means it’s been ten years since I first saw them live. That’s right, I first saw them in support of their debut album, Sing the Greys, at SXSW… which means it’s been 10 years since my first trip to SXSW.

SXSW 2010 Day 3 - 05

Where the hell did all that time go?

Yeah, I know I promised a longer post this week but it’s chaos at work and I have three essays due for fellowship applications so I’m cutting myself some slack. On the plus side, I’m giving you another week to vote for your favorite comic book cover artist.

Who is your favorite 2016 Eisner nominee for "Best Cover Artist" (pick up to 2 artists)?

I Miss SXSW – 10. March, 2016

2016 marks the 2nd year in a row that I’m skipping the SXSW Music Conference and I miss it so bad that I’m about to…

And not just because I’m missing some of my favorite acts like Crystal Castles

Frightened Rabbit

and The Kills

But also because I’m going to miss a keynote by this guy…

And this lady…

Goddamnit! As all of you as my witness, I’m going to SXSW next year!

SXSW 2013 Day 5 – 17. March, 2013

And on the final day of full festival frolic, I finally caught one of my all time favor bands, Frightened Rabbit.

SXSW 2013 Day 5 - 12

The boys sounded great, although being out in the sun doesn’t seem to suit them well. Also, I remember when it was just three of them. These days there are up to six members on stage at one time. Guess that’s what signing to WB get’s ya.

Next I caught the novelty band, The Beards.

SXSW 2013 Day 5 - 28

Apparently these Aussies have three albums and every song is about beards. One of them even kept looking at me funny, like he wanted to touch my beard. Creepy… yet alluring. And did I mention that they were so much fun live? Well, they are and you really should go see them.

I then ran across 6th Street to check out Empress Of.

SXSW 2013 Day 5 - 32

Not my cup of tea.

I then trudged south of the Convention Center to catch Kinky.

SXSW 2013 Day 5 - 34

Holy guacamole, these guys still bring it. This is my third or fourth time seeing them and I’m still surprised that they haven’t lost their appeal live. That is something special. Please, go see them live if you haven’t.

Wandering up towards north Austin, I caught Jenny O at a tiny bar.

SXSW 2013 Day 5 - 38

She was fine, I just wasn’t feeling it. I blame Kinky for being so good.

My final act of SXSW was Vampire Weekend.

SXSW 2013 Day 5 - 40

Fucking awesome, but I’m curious about their new album. It sounds very different from their past stuff. I think I had the same sort of freak out about their previous album, but I feel like these feelings are warranted this time around (I seem to remember having that exact same feeling last time). Be on the look out for a new single early next week.

So my final pics of the fest. The first goes to The Beards.

And we end with my Scottish boys, Frightened Rabbit.

Time for some sleep before getting ready to face reality.

Friday Fun: Frightened Rabbit on The World – 7. May, 2010

By now you gotta know how much I love Frightened Rabbit so it’s no surprise that I’d want to share this interview they did with Marco Werman of The World.

As an added bonus, here’s a live in-studio version of “Living in Color”.

Coachella vs The Volcano – 16. April, 2010

Thanks to this volcano erupting in Iceland, The Cribs, Bad Lieutenant, Gary Numan and my favorite band of the moment, Frightened Rabbit, will probably have to cancel their Coachella appearances because they’re stuck in Europe

I only got one thing to say to that.

Must See Web TV – 24. March, 2010

Okay, time to get off the SXSW high (but the new Frightened Rabbit album is still on repeat play on my iPod) and time to get back to the creative grind.

That means time to get my multi-platform web series back on track but first, allow me to take a look around the playing field. According to Mashable, these are among the most watched (and therefore the best, I guess) web series around.

I’ve mentioned The Guild before and am excited to see that I can watch episodes via Netflix streaming on my PS3 (when I’m not playing BORDERLANDS or GOD OF WAR 3).

What would the web be without violent cartoons?

Here’s a fairly typical “high concept” web idea.

Wait, you loved BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, right?

And this is the most watched web series out there.

No, seriously, 8 million people have watched this. EIGHT MILLION?!?!?!

Let me be honest and say that I don’t get the mass appeal of most of these. I’ll forgo skewering the technical shortcomings and simply point out that most employ terrible storytelling and awful acting. I can see why the internet has given “sketch” a bad name.

But I digress… back to grind stone… after a little more GOD OF WAR 3.

SXSW 2010 Photos – 22. March, 2010

First you should know that I go to festivals to see bands, not take photos. That said, I think I sometimes take some great photos but please, judge for yourself. Here are all the pics I took from SXSW. They’re not color corrected or cropped and all most all the time I was still trying to rock out so forgive the sloppiness.

Oh, I really need a great digital point-n-shoot with a zoom and a super fast lens. Recommendations?

SXSW 2010 Day 4 – 21. March, 2010

My final day at SXSW started late but thanks to my friend, the beautiful & always stylish Kelly, I was able to see Ben Gibbard play the Stereogum party.

SXSW 2010 Day 4 - 08

Man, this man and his band will always have space on my music shelf.

I then ran across town to catch The Boxer Rebellion.

SXSW 2010 Day 4 - 10

As you can see from that pic, these guys were rocking the hell out of their last show.

And what SXSW would be complete without a Frightened Rabbit sighting.

SXSW 2010 Day 4 - 21

So damn good. I’m pretty sure the plane ride home will feature lots of their tunes only interrupted by…

SXSW 2010 Day 4 - 40

This was my second time seeing them but now I’m completely in love with Rachel Flotard. Why? First, she saw me singing along and mentioned it. Second, the set was awesome and she even took an off-the-cuff request from the audience. Third, she referenced both Winger and “Pigs in Space“. Seriously, Rachel, when you’re in LA drop me a line and I’ll take you out for a dinner.

Next up was Minipop.

SXSW 2010 Day 4 - 50

Why these guys? Because I like their song from the 1,038 MP3 SXSW music sampler I told you about. What an added bonus that the lead singer is such a cutie.

I then saw Best Coast because my friend Kate tole me to.

SXSW 2010 Day 4 - 57

Since they’re a new band and the lead singer was whining about having played so many shows at the festival (who didn’t?) all I’ll say is that I should have checked out Surfer Blood instead.

And finally I braved the cold night to witness Death.

SXSW 2010 Day 4 - 63

They were awesome and if you don’t know their story you should listen to this NPR story. And obviously they’re my pick-of-the-day.

[audio:Keep On Knocking.mp3]

And with the I say adios to SXSW. I hope to come back soon. LA, here I come.

BTW, the next stop on the Tony Music Express is Coachella!

SXSW 2010 Day 3 – 20. March, 2010

So the day started off with a very dry and boring panel. So much so that I stared nodding off and almost slammed my head on the chair in front of me but my fortunes turned when I scored a pass to the Spin party.

The first act I caught at the party was F*cked Up.

SXSW 2010 Day 3 - 02

Who knew metal still lived? Not I… and I’m okay with that.

Next was Miike Snow.

SXSW 2010 Day 3 - 04

Very pretty but not quite made for the large, outdoor BBQ vibe.

Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings were next and they ripped it up.

SXSW 2010 Day 3 - 07

Seriously, if you haven’t yet, no matter what kind of music you like, you have to check her out.

And finally, the return of Hole.

SXSW 2010 Day 3 - 19

You know, I was never a fan but I can appreciate Courtney being a rock star (but I’m still not a fan).

I should also mention that although I didn’t see Frightened Rabbit this day I did meet Scott (I’d run into him 4 time this day and hear the band playing from afar twice).

SXSW 2010 Day 3 - 05

Christ, I love this band.

Okay, it’s time to return to the always fun Japan Nite and first up was JennyOops.

SXSW 2010 Day 3 - 27

What is it with the Japanese and rocking power pop/punk trios of ladies?

I then wandered over to see Band of Skulls.

SXSW 2010 Day 3 - 29

Holy! These guys are a cross between blues rock and awesome. You much check them out.

Back to Japan night for Okamoto’s.

SXSW 2010 Day 3 - 41

God bless these kids for watching too many videos of The Rolling Stone on Ed Sullivan.

Next was The Boxer Rebellion in a very odd venue.

SXSW 2010 Day 3 - 37

Thank goodness they rocked it because this roof top bar turned stage was not conducive to rock magic.

Once again into the Japan Nite, this time for Omodaka.

SXSW 2010 Day 3 - 39

A cross between dance music and performance art, this person rocked it with his portable gaming systems. BTW, Japan Nite is coming to LA (and a few other cities). You really should catch the show if you can.

Next on the same stage was Chatmonchy.

SXSW 2010 Day 3 - 42

Another girl rock trio from Japan, they seems a bit jet-lagged, as if they just got off the plane (someone told me they had).

I then ran up the street to see Ra Ra Riot.

SXSW 2010 Day 3 - 45

They went on late and were plagued by technical difficulties but how can I hold that against a band with two such cuties on strings?

SXSW 2010 Day 3 - 46

SXSW 2010 Day 3 - 43

Man, I’d love to be the meat in that love sandwich.

Finally, I ended the night with Les Savy Fav and they had even worse technical difficulties.

SXSW 2010 Day 3 - 50

So, pick of the day has gotta be Omodaka.

[audio:Kyoteizinc (video mix).mp3]

Until tomorrow.
