Vacation? Bull! I worked my ass off this summer (and I managed to have some fun, too). What did I do this summer?

  1. I wrote my first TV spec for the now canceled TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES.
  2. I found an editor for my feature.
  3. I shot a live-action/stop-motion spec for Amazon.
  4. I went to my first Comic-Con.
  5. I went to my first Tiki Oasis.
  6. I shot the first material for my multi-medium project.
  7. I directed scenes for an actor’s reel.
  8. I saw The Kills, Neko Case, Death Cab for Cutie and Andrew Bird in concert.

I’d say that’s a pretty damn productive summer.

My sister wanted to get home early so we hit the 5 before noon and got tangled in traffic. Not a big loss, the only thing I really wanted to do was say “hi” to my friend Jenni after her movie panel.

So, before I dive back into After Effects I will say this: I think I’d like to go back next year so let’s start planning.

Note to all, if you want to wear a costume to Comic-Con and do so with style, go steampunk.

I then jumped into a line thinking “30 minutes would be enough time to get into a ballroom for a FUTURAMA panel. Um, no. I missed that entire panel and most of the SIMPSONS panel that followed.

Undeterred, I lined up extra early for my “Writing for TV” panel which meant I sat through “A Spotlight on Seth” and they didn’t mean Rogan or McFarlane. This guys, this illustrator… wow. He projected a PowerPoint highlighting works from his sketch book and then proceeded to tell twelve seemingly unrelated autobiographical stories. It was like a mini episode of THIS AMERICAN LIFE. My attention was rapt. This artist has a new fan.

The “Writing for TV” panel was just what I expected (I’ve been to hundreds of these by now) but the funniest moment came when the writers started heckling a woman in a military costume and then she said, “this isn’t a costume, it’s my uniform.” How quickly they tripped over themselves to thank her for her service (FYI, she was a communications liaison).

After that I wandered towards Hall H (I heard someone call it “Hall Hell”) expecting a 5 hours wait to hear Kevin Smith talk.

Comic-Con 2009 Day 03 - 33

Imagine my delight when I walked in without any wait. I was bummed that Kevin didn’t show any clips of his upcoming movie but the crowd loved him anyway.

After that it was time for a steak dinner and then back to the After Effects grind (gotta take 2k stills, do a basic gamma correction, animate them along their X, Y and Z axis to give the illusion of a hand-held camera and then crop, adjust & resize them for a 1920 x 1080, 29.97 HDTV timeline).

(Ugh)

I could have listened to these guys talk about film for hours. I left the panel feeling incredibly inspired. Then I checked out the Star Wars Fan Film Awards and I got really… well… (how do I stay positive here?)… let’s just say I left early and decided that a good night’s sleep would be time better spent.

Comic-Con 2009 Day 01 - 7

Today we (my sister and I) checked out the KICK-ASS and THIRST panels and they weren’t as crowded as I thought they’d be.

The highlight of the evening was our final event, the “Superhero Kung Fu Extravaganza” and boy it didn’t disappoint. Sure, a guy showing you cool clips from awesome kung-fu films doesn’t sound like it’d be that much fun but it was. I loved it.

Bleary eyed, I gazed at the Thursday schedule. Things of potential interest:

  • ROBOT CHICKEN – Maybe I could pick up some stop-motion tips (I wonder how many set-ups they knock-out in a day).
  • AVATAR – I want to go but I don’t want to wait three hours in line. Plus we’re getting it at work so I’m gonna see it before all of you (I’m fiesty when I haven’t slept).
  • PANDORUM – Evil Paul Anderson, he feels my pain, or so it seemed from EVENT HORIZON.
  • KICK-ASS – I’m just gonna be pissed I didn’t make it. Good, anger is sometimes more potent than coffee (damn, I need to shake the sleep off me).
  • THIRST – I love OLDBOY (but am curious of a Speilberg/Will Smith remake).
  • Oni Press – I like their comics, plus I should have directed WHITEOUT.
  • J. Michael Straczynski – I wrote this down cause I saw “writing” in the title and I gotta get stareted on a new feature and a FRINGE spec.
  • DEXTER – He feels my pain, too (Jesus, I need sleep).
  • The Physics of Hollywood Movies – I put this one down because it’ll make my brain explode.

    • Wow, I’m really punchy, surly and tired. My sister’s gotta drive us down to San Diego. Yes, that’s right, I’m going to Comic-Con with my sister. She actually proposed the trip to me. I think this is the first pseudo-family vacation in over a decade. Let’s see if we get in a massive fight.

    Um, ignore that last statement. I just need to sleep.

  • Mailed off my TSCC spec to the Warner Bros Writers Workshop.
  • Recorded character voices for my Amazon spec. Thanks to Curtiss, Dan, Karina & Michael.
  • Gathering supplies for stop motion/live action shoot. Still need 1GB CF card, Nikon DSLR battery, HDV tape, wire (is that crafts store or hardware store?) and sleep.
  • Still need to plan my Comic-Con. Marcos, Tina, David G., expect an email from me. Anyone else want to offer advice or let me know what I should check out?
  • Beat the heat. So hot in my room yesterday that I lost a couple pounds and my hand started trembling.

    After glancing yesterday’s news, it seems like I should expect a giant press event from the major broadcasters peddling any of their shows that might possibly have a geeky male audience.

    Hey, hold on, I’m not trying to be snarky but why there hell will there be a GLEE press event? Do we have to provide our own cabbages?

    (Dark Tony’s Conscience: That one goes out to my buddy, Mr. Big Hollywood Producer.)

    (Tony’s Conscience: No, no, no! Don’t go negative. Stay positive. There’ll be a FRINGE event. Your TV crush Anna Torv might be there. Sure, you probably have a better chance of talking to her at the Sunset Coffee Bean but…)
