What’s the Best Action Movie Script? – 17. November, 2016

What are the best written action movie scripts out there? Many will say Die Hard

… or Aliens

… or — if you require a contemporary example — Gravity.

What do you think is a terrifically written action movie script?

Consumed April 2016 – 30. April, 2016

April showers bring… actually, we really didn’t get any April showers in Los Angeles, and they sure didn’t bring me much of anything because I’m still banging out this iZombie spec. That’s right, it’s still not done. Am I worried?

Therefore, this update will be short and sweet, right?

Let’s go.

Doctor Who – Finally started the season where Capaldi joined. Have only seen the season premiere but this is my favorite moment so far.

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD
Justified – Only ever manage to watch this while traveling but damn, it’s good.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow
Catastrophe – So glad this is back.

The Flash
Bob’s Burgers
Crazy Ex- Girlfriend – Goddamn, this show keeps getting better and better.

Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice – Best unintentional comedy of 2016.

Aliens – Maybe one of the best goddamn movies ever made. Just bad ass.

The Kills, The Big Pink & LA Witch live @ The Mayan  – Holy s**t, I miss live rock n’ roll.

Marvel Comics: The Untold Story by Sean Howe – A must read for anyone considering a career in the comic industry (emphasis on industry). Uncompromising. Brutal. The naked truth.

Mr. Splitfoot by Samantha Hunt – Creepy as f**k!

The Punisher
Tokyo Ghosts
Plutona – In the best possible way, a super hero comic version of Stand By Me.

Rat Queens
Monstress – Holy crap, this comic is 13 kinds of awesome.

Injustice: Gods Among Us Year Five
Black Magick
Citizen Jack
DC Comic’s Bombshells
Karma Police
Past the Last Mountain
The Spire
Locke & Key: Welcome to Lovecraft – Just an epic comic. Can’t wait to read more.

The Walking Dead
Jupiter’s Circle
Virgil – A brutal revenge story from a unique perspective.

And that’s a wrap on April. Would love to chat more but I have a ton of writing so this is me.

Except that I’ll mostly be doing my writing at night. Mostly.

Hicks Lives! – 26. February, 2015

Aliens is the greatest movie ever. Period.

Okay, yeah, I know you have opinions but you’re wrong.

For about as long as I’ve wanted to be a filmmaker, I’ve wanted to make an Alien movie. Sadly, instead I’ve borne witness to uber-talented filmmakers falling upon the noble sword of sequels. David Fincher, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Joss Whedon, all of them bested by the series. At least Danny Boyle had the sense to steer clear when he couldn’t make the movie he envisioned.

But now Neill Blomkamp has thrown his hat into the ring. You know what, I didn’t fly into a rage when I heard that. He might be able to knock this one out of the park. From his conceptual artwork, it’s clear his movie would negate the third and fourth sequels (cause it looks like he lets Hicks live).

That’s a great call. F**k canon. Retcon the s**t out of this series.

Mr. Blomkamp, I salute your moxie. Now don’t screw this up.

By the way, this pic of Sigourney is sexy as hell, right?

RIP Giger (Is It Finally Safe To Dream?) – 13. May, 2014

H.R. Giger has passed away due to injuries related to a fall. My deepest condolences to his family.

What follows is meant as a great tribute.

F**K THAT GUY! There are few people on this planet more responsible for my sleepless nights than Giger. As a kid, I saw Aliens and every time I closed my eyes I saw this…

or this…

or this…

Even if I had a 10mm M41A pulse rifle with over-and-under pump action grenade launcher, I still couldn’t sleep.

…so many goddamn sleepless night.

Rest in peace Mr. Giger. At least one of us has stopped the nightmares.

Giving Thanks for James Cameron – 26. November, 2009

First, I hope you’re having a happy Thanksgiving. Now please allow me to give thanks for…

That’s right, I’m giving thanks for James Cameron and not just because he’s finally releasing a movie.

No, I’d like to thank him for putting some ducats in my pocket.

As some of you may know, I’m involved in digital cinema. I run a quality control team and right now AVATAR has our complete attention. But if you really know me, you know I’m a workaholic. That’s why I took a job timing and placing stereoscopic subtitles for AVATAR. No rest for the wicked, right?

Also, if you’ve ever asked me what my favorite film is, I have a quick and reliable answer. They are (in no particular order)…

  • Raging Bull
  • Raising Arizona
  • Aliens
  • All three were formative in pushing me towards a career in the movies and each has left an indelible imprint on the work I do. How so? You’ll just have to look at my stuff and figure that out for yourself but I’ll tell you that ALIENS was the first movie I obsessed over. I read all the novelizations, I knew all the characters, gear and dialog, I played all the video games, I even had nightmares for years to come (it was the little ones that freaked me out).

Jim (I can call you “Jim,” right?), I’m treating your flick as if it were my own so don’t worry, I won’t let Paul Verhoeven subtitle this motherfucker (that’s for all of you that read Jim’s profile in The New Yorker).

People of the world, if you have a quality AVATAR viewing experience, give me some props!
