Previously on… – January 11th, 2010

I have a question and I’m putting it to you, or at least those of you with experience in the scripted television industry.

I wrote a spec for TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES and I’m getting ready to submit it to a management company. That show, along with most hour-long scripted shows these days, is heavily serialized. Therefore, should I include a paragraph to catch up the reader, something akin to the “previously on…” most shows employ, like this example from FRINGE?

Also, if my spec occurs at a specific point in the show’s chronology, should I point that out? For example, “this takes place just after episode 3 of the second season”.

Thoughts?

Ehhh… I don’t think it hurts. Lets them see that you are interested and know the the show. However, don’t get too creative with it because recaps are generally not written, but developed by the editor/producer in editorial.

Uhmmm… in terms of your second question; its their show. they should know their material enough to know where this fits –although, you don’t want anything too outdated or too far off from the current character development / story lines.

i agree with Mr. Face. You can add a little recap in the beginning but don’t bother with the note about where the episode fits in.

Also you know that a show generally is not interested in reading a spec of their own show. That is, if you are interested in writing for TERMINATOR, you don’t write a spec for that show, you write a spec for a comparable dramatic one- hour series. And vice versa. That’s because the staff of a particular show know their own show so well that any spec of their own show won’t impress them, and they’ll most likely be able to pick it apart. They want to be able to see how you write, and that’s actually better with a different show.

Thankfully the TERMINATOR show was canceled so I don’t have to worry about that.

    :(
