#26 – 3:10 to Yuma – September 26th, 2007

A great mixture of action and bravura acting, this film delivers everything you’d hope… which is great but a bit disappointing.

I have almost no complaints about this movie. I could nitpick about the film feeling a bit too long or I could complain that the characters say way too much at the end but I’m grasping. It’s a well designed machine.

Unfortunately, although it’s a good morality play disguised as a western, the film doesn’t strive to push beyond the genre. It has all the goods (director, actors, story) but the film has no daring ambitions to be something greater. I think of HEAT by Michael Mann. That’s a cop picture that, love it or hate it, wants to be about bigger things. I wish this film had the courage to be greater than its design. If that were the case, we’d be talking about a whole slew of Oscars. Instead, we get a film that’ll be discovered in the Nexflix “If you liked ‘X’, we think you’ll love 3:10 TO YUMA” suggestions box.
