Okay, maybe I was a bit harsh on Danny Boyle. I find I’m hardest on the ones with the greatest potential. It also doesn’t help that I envy his career. I am insanely jealous that he has worked in so many genres (from drama to romantic comedy to kid’s flick to sci-fi adventure) while always making a film that is distinctly his own. It’s a filmography that reminds me of Coppola (Francis, not Sophia) and Soderbergh.
I am also hard on him because, like Soderbergh and the elder Coppola, he is a thoughtful, well intentioned filmmaker. Don’t beleive me? Take a listen to Danny Boyle on The Treatment. After Elvis Mitchell’s interview, I realized we had a few things in common. First, I approach my stories the same way Danny Boyle does (plot then characters) and although we are inspired by films we get our buzz from music.
And Danny, know that I’m rooting for your next film to kick some serious @$$.
