While a vast improvement over OCEAN’S 12, this second sequel of a remake leaves you yearning for Soderbergh’s OCEAN’S 11. Why? First, this films isn’t as breezy or cool as the first, nor could any sequel ever be because now we’re expecting that. With the original, we were genuinely surprised.
But the real reason this one leaves you wanting is that at no point does it ever seem like the guys aren’t gonna pull this off. There is zero tension. The only moment of suspense and conflict, when the gang has to approach their former enemy for help, is resolved in less than five minutes.
Effortless caper + forced cool = boring movie.
Filmmakers of OCEAN’S 13, for the sake of all involved let this be the last one. Let this be your RETURN OF THE JEDI. Don’t shoot for a PHANTOM MENACE.
