#15 – Spider-Man 3 – May 8th, 2007

Dudes don’t cry that much.

I’m sorry but it’s true.

Before I go there, I’ll say that the critics were right. The movie is everything they say it is. It feels like a factory ordered sequel to a huge franchise rather than a multi-million dollar labor of geek love like the previous two. Every charming thread this series had has lost its way on the road to becoming the calculated success the Sony accountants were hoping for.

But my major gripe: all the male characters cry at the drop of the hat. Even the villains! Okay, fine, give the Sandman a sappy back-story and I guess he can blubber like a middle-aged woman watching a soap but Venom? Come on! Hand to God, Eddie Brock, as Venom, gets misty eyed. I kid you not. For some reason Sam Raimi wanted Venom to cry.

What-the-f**k?!

But I did get a kick out of the emo version of Peter Parker, or “My Chemical Pete,” as I call him. Look, do you remember that moment in SPIDER-MAN 2 where Peter Parker walks the streets of New York while “Rain Drops Keep Falling on my Head” plays? If you loved that moment, you might like My Chemical Pete. If you thought that was the only flaw of #2, then you ain’t gonna like this one.
